History

Although not much is known of the origins of the settlement, it made up the rural part of the parish of Shoreditch during medieval times. When it gained its own church, the area was given independent ecclesiastical status in 1826.

During the Tudor era, the public gardens of Hoxton were a popular retreat for those in the City who wanted a breath of fresh air. As such, the area was populated with large manor houses owned by the nobility. However, things changed in the 17th century when the nobility was broken up and their properties converted into mad houses and schools; almshouses were also built in the land.

The arrival of industrialisation and the railway saw the wealthy abandon Hoxton resulting in the area being populated by the less fortunate. The 20th century saw a revival in the area when a large part of the district was gentrified; this resulted in a portion of Hoxton becoming a hub for arts and entertainment.

Attractions

Hoxton is not that difficult to get to. It’s not far off from the Old Street Tube Station which can be reached through a five-minute ride on the northern line from London Bridge. With lots of attractions, there’s more than enough to keep you entertained during a day’s visit or a weekend getaway.
