HISTORY
Spelled Hundeslow in old records, the origin of the town's name points to Anglo-Saxon origin particularly the term Hundes hlaw, which means “the dog's mound” or “the mound of a man named or nicknamed Hound.”
Situated on the Bath Road, the town of Hounslow was centered around the Holy Trinity Priory that was founded in 1211. The priory developed the small village into a town through the addition of regular markets and other facilities for those who traveled to and from London. Even though the priory dissolved in 1539, Hounslow remained an important staging point on the Bath Road.
The Great Western Railway Line, which stretched from London to Bristol, lessened long-distance travel along the Bath Road. By 1842, Hounslow was suffering a “general depreciation of property.” In 1850, the Hounslow Loop Line was constructed to prompt new development.
In the 1920s, the Great West Road was constructed and attracted the construction of factories and headquarters of large companies. The factories were sources for local employment which led to an increase in housing development. However, factories were soon replaced by offices with further expansion in hotel and housing stock.
