HISTORY

The earliest surviving reference to Hanwell was in AD 959 when it was recorded as Hanewelle in pledge (Alfwyn pawned his land for money in order to participate on a pilgrimage). The name Hanwell dates back to before the Domesday Book and could be attributed to the large stone located near the old Rectory (Han in Anglo-Saxon denoted a boundary stone).

Hanwell's borders once stretched from the bend of the River Brent at Greenford then followed the river down to the River Thames. The village formed a natural boundary between the different tribes of the south-east of England before the marshes were drained.

St Mary's Church – built in 1841, this Gothic Revival structure was made with masoned white limestone and gault brickwork. The church is one of George Gilbert Scott's earliest work.

St Thomas the Apostle – a Grade II* listed building, the church was designed by Edward Maufe and it was completed in 1934.

St Mellitus Church – this Gothic-style building from the Edwardian period was constructed to accommodate the growing population of Hanwell. The office of Sir Arthur Blomfield designed the building in 1909 and built in March 1910.

Brent Lodge Park and Animal Centre – acquired from Sir Montague Sharpe by Ealing Borough Council in 1931 as a recreation ground. It served as a nine-hole golf course for many years and featured a wired enclosure containing unwanted pet rabbits. Over the years, the animal collection grew as the centre received more exotic animals. As such, the centre became a recognized zoo and member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Hanwell Clock Tower – unveiled as part of the celebration of the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

Elthorne Park – traces its origins back to the 1500s when it occupied a much bigger land. It was opened as a park on 11 June 1910.
