Farringdon is a historic part of the City of London that has been around since the 12th century. It's part of the Islington borough in Greater London and is divided into two wards: Farringdon Within and Farringdon Without. Farringdon: A Look into the Past

Farringdon was originally known as Ward of Anketill de Auvergne and was under the political rule of the Farindon family. William Farindon purchased the Aldermanry of the ward in 1281 and his son, Nicholas Farindon, was appointed by King Edward II as the Lord Mayor of London in the early 1300s. The ward was eventually renamed Farringdon in honour of Nicholas.

The ward remained intact until 1394, when it was split into Farringdon Within and Farringdon Without. Farringdon Within was located inside the London Wall, while Farringdon Without was located outside the Wall. However, this is no longer the case today; because of the 2003 boundary changes, some parts of Farringdon Within now fall outside the wall (which has been mostly demolished). The boundary change also caused Farringdon Without to be reduced in size, although it's still the largest among London's 25 wards.
