East Wickham is a village located within the eastern portion of the English region of London. There are over 10,000 residents living here. It borders on the Royal Borough of Greenwich and just northwest of Bexleyheath. The village used to be named Estwycham back in 1284. The word Wickham means a dwelling place or settlement.

East Wickham is listed in the Domesday book of 1086, and included the region of Plumstead.

East Wickham’s Church on Upper Wickham Lane was considered a chapel of ease of the larger St. Nicholas’ Church in Plumstead. This church was built in the 13th century. This church was dedicated to St. Michael, and still has a small ancient portion remaining. There are some memorial plaques dedicated to Bradigdone and Payne families. The churchyard is notable for being the place where Henry Kipling (1780) is buried, and Mary Skegness (1790).

The first school was built in 1728 by William Foster of Croydon. It was for the education of the poor children of the region who did not have the means to travel to larger villages.

In 1796, the Environs of London book lists the village as encompassing 700 acres of land.  In 1730, there were five baptisms and six burials noted. The house count in East Wickham was noted as being thirty-four. It lists the land as being highly arable, with plenty of woodlands, and a small amount of pastures. The soil is listed as being composed mainly of gravel and clay.

Welling hamlet used to be part of the manor of East Wickham, with the church centered in the middle. East Wickham became a parish in 1854, until 1902, when it was merged with Bexley Urban District.

The famous singer and songwriter Kate Bush was born in East Wickham in 1958, and was raised here until she was an adult.

The village used to have a manor, held by Robert Burnell, who was the bishop of Bath and Wells. He died in 1292, and the estates passed to the Handlo and Lovell families. There are records of the estate passing down through many other relations and families over the years. In 1767 the estate was divided in half. The Bennett family acquired part of the Manor, and today it is the property of the Reverend John Bennett. Unfortunately, the original building no longer remains.

In East Wickham is a large park called East Wickham Open Space. It encompasses over ninety acres of land full of wildlife and their habitats. This land contains the original East Wickham Farm and East Wickham House. The farm’s current structure dates to 1843. 400 trees and shrubs were planted to fill in the green space.
