Flower Delivery to Colney Hatch with Clare Florist
Colney Hatch is an area of London, England. It’s the historical name for this small region in the London Borough of Barnet, beside the London Borough of Haringey. The name Colney Hatch was derived from a hamlet of a similar name, in the parish of Friern/Fryern in 1409. This name was originally recorded during the fifteenth century and is pronounced “Coney”. It’s believed that the hatch part of the name provided access to Hollick Wood, which is now gone.
There were only thirty-three houses in Colney Hatch in 1851. But that all changed once the Colney Hatch Asylum was built. Colney Hatch grew in the nineteenth century, after the Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum was built. The hospital was in operation from 1851 to 1993, and was built in the style of an Italian monastery. The asylum was self-sufficient with its own farm and bakery, and powered by gasworks. There was also a shoemaker on site. It’s had a long interesting history, and often the term “Colney Hatch” was used negatively for madhouse abuse. It was large and had over 1,250 beds, being the largest of its kind in Europe.
Over 3500 mental patients resided there, and it officially had the longest indoor corridor in Britain. It could take nearly two hours to walk from one end to the other. In WWII the asylum had a section converted to an EMS hospital. Today, the asylum has luxury flats called Princess Park Manor and Friern Village. Members of the band One Direction and many football players live here. In the past, a potential Jack the Ripper suspect resided at the asylum, as well as Dorothy Lawrence, the first woman to fight on the front lines of WWI, until she turned herself in. Eventually her mental health declined and she ended up at the asylum.
The area of Colney Hatch is located on Colney Hatch Lane. It connects Friern Barnet to Muswet Hill, and crosses the North Circular Road. This region of London contains mostly residential houses and apartment buildings. Houses were built with a mix of Victorian, Edwardian, and modern development styles.
The park was originally named Colney Hatch Park, but the council wanted nothing else to be named Colney Hatch, so it was changed to Southgate, and is actually more a part of Southgate than of Colney Hatch.
The closest train station is at the The New Southgate rail station. It was also originally named Colney Hatch, but has been renamed several times, settling at New Southgate. The station was finally electrified in 1976.
