Flower Delivery to Bishopsgate with Clare Florist
Bishopsgate is both the name of one of the 25 wards of the city of London and the name of a major road – which is part of the A10 – between Gracechurch Street and Norton Folgate right in the north-east corner of the main financial district of London.
Bishopsgate got its name from one of the original gates in the London Wall. Now, this spot is marked by a stone bishop's mitre which is fixed on a building located at the junction with Wormwood Street.
GEOGRAPHY
To the north of Bishopsgate is Worship Street, which is where the edge of the City meets the boroughs of Islington and Hackney. To the east, the ward neighbours Portsoken ward and the borough of Tower Hamlets. The boundary in the western portion is formed by Old Broad Street and Broad Street ward.
The wards of Aldgate, Coleman Street, Cornhill and Lime Street also bound Bishopsgate. It is divided into “Within” and “Without” with much of the ward being “Without” since the boundary changes that took effect in 1994 and 2003.
HISTORY
Bishop's Gate was originally Roman and was rebuilt by Hansa merchants in 1471 as an exchange for steelyard privileges. 1735 marked the year when City authorities erected the final form of the ward. However, it was demolished in 1760.
In the past, the gates were used to display the heads of criminals. There used to be many coaching inns in the area too to accommodate passengers travelling the Old North Road.
Now, Bishopsgate is home of Dirty Dick's (a pub which is more than 200 years old), the Bishopsgate Institute and several offices and skyscrapers. Some of the offices of major banks are located here, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
