HISTORY

Bermondsey was occupied as far back as the Anglo-Saxon period. Then, it was held by King William, but smaller portions of the land were under Robert, Count of Mortain, who was the king's half brother. The Knights Templar also owned land in this area.

After the Great Fire of London, Bermondsey was settled by affluent families  during the 17th century and it transformed into a garden suburb the likes of Grange Road. St Mary Magdalen in Bermondsey Street is one of the structures to have survived from this era.

The 18th century saw the town become a spa leisure resort thanks to the discovery of a spring from the river Neckinger.

Parts of Bermondsey in the 19th century became a slum, especially along the riverside, due to the arrival of industrial plants, docks and immigrant housing.

The area suffered damage during World War II, as well as after the collapse of the river trade. However, fortunes changed when wharves in the area were renovated.

Now, it's a lively part of south London with bars, pubs, restaurants, coffee shops and other attractions.
