HISTORY

Evidence shows that the village of Painswick has been settled as far back as the Iron Age. This is proven by the defensive earthworks located atop Painswick Beacon.

The village of Painswick makes an appearance in the Domesday Book but under the name Wiche which means dairy farm. This was its name until the 13th century when it started to be called Painswik. It is said the name is from an earlier lord of the manor called Pain Fitzjohn with Pain being a common Anglo-Norman name.

St Mary's Parish Church – a Grade I listed structure. The churchyard is popular for its ancient yew trees. Also, several chest tombs and monuments from the early 17th century are also found in the churchyard.
