The humble village of Kemble, Gloucestershire lies in the historic area of Wiltshire, roughly four miles from Cirencester. Perhaps most notably, this village and civil parish of roughly 1,036 inhabitants is the closest town to the Thames Head or the source of the River Thames. This means that Kemble has an honored place in England and has been in place for well over 1,000 years.

History

The area itself has been populated for thousands of years, but the first recording of a settlement was not established until the 7th century AD when a pagan, Anglo-Saxon cemetery was founded. The village church was established around 1250 AD and has clear Norman influence as indicated by the door and tower which is still present. The spire of the tower was added in 1405 and the entire church was restored in 1872.

Over the centuries, the village grew around the church, but it never became that large perhaps because the population spread out to the neighboring towns. By the 20th century, the village began adding modern amenities, but it’s most notable gain was the creation of Kemble Airport in 1936 which is located on the edge of the village. By the time World War II began, it was home to RAF aircraft and served as an Air Transport Auxiliary site for the region.
After the war, the RAF remained at Kemble, now renamed Cotswold Airport, became home to the Red Arrows, the RAF aerobatic display team from 1966 to 1983. When the RAF moved operations to RAF Scampton, the facility was taken over by the US Air Force and used for maintenance purposes. By the end of the Cold War, the airfield was returned to the RAF where vehicles and planes are now stored.

Attractions

You can start at Cotswold Airport, which now has a museum of British planes as well as holding two air display events annually. The Cotswold Gliding Club however, uses the facilities at nearby Aston Down where you can see them glide the year-round.
The Kemble railway station serves the area and provides direct transit to locations such as Gloucester, Cheltenham, and Swinton, London Paddington, and more. For those traveling from Tetbury and Cirencester, Kemble will be a stop along the way.
The village itself does not have much in the way of direct attractions, apart from the museum at the Cotswold Airport. Otherwise, there is a pub and local store that serves the village. Still, for those interested in the history of the region along with viewing the beautiful countryside where the River Thames begins, Kemble is nice area to spend a few hours when traveling.
