Located in the Cotswolds, Cutsdean is a typical small village in Gloucestershire and located near the larger town of Cheltenham. Cutsdean offers a rich history that can be traced all the way back to the Anglo-Saxon period more than a thousand years ago. During that time, several villages were being formed in the Gloucestershire region of the Cotswolds.

Although the exact origins of Cutsdean are not fully understood, it is located along the River Windrush which is typical for many villages of the era. In addition, the village is located in the Cotswolds which is a series of prominent hills in the south-central area of England. Although the Romans passed through the area, there is no evidence that they set up any large forts or towns in the Cutsdean region. Only after the Romans left and the Anglo-Saxon period began is there evidence that the village was established.

Over the next thousand years as the Norman Conquest put an end to Anglo-Saxon rule, Cutsdean actually enjoyed a considerable amount of prosperity along with many of the other Cotswold villages thanks to the wool trade. The area in particular with its grasslands is well suited for sheep and many of the buildings and in particular churches were built during this time.

Defined by bedrock of limestone from the Jurassic era, the hills feature grasslands which are relatively uncommon in the UK. Cutsdean is but one village which has seen its share of Cotswold stone, a gold-coloured stone that was used to construct many of the homes in the region. The Cutsdean Quarry was the site of considerable mining for Chipping Norton limestone or slate that was most often used for roofing tiles. Today, the quarry has been closed and it is now a large habitat for grassland, scree and scrub.  
While the quarry has been closed for some time, many of the buildings in Cutsdean and the surrounding villages are constructed from the limestone and use the same type of roofing tiles. This provides the Cotswold communities with their unique, striking appearance. Until 1931, Cutsdean was part of the Worcestershire as part of the Worcester Priory. Since then, the village has become part of the Gloucestershire region and the boundaries have been readjusted accordingly.
