Cold Aston is a small village located in the Gloucestershire county of England. This village is in the southwestern portion of the country. Cold Aston is also known as Cold Blank. It’s close to the city of Gloucester, about thirty kilometres away, and also Clapton, Lower Slaughter, Naunton, Notgrove, and Turkdean. The village lies in the Cotswolds, which has been designated as an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”.

To qualify for this designation, it must be an attractive conservation area. These areas are protected by similar laws that protect national parks, but are governed by their own independent body.

Cold Aston is about 4.5 kilometres from its post town of Cheltenham. It’s not right on a river, but the closest river is River Windrush that runs through Bourton-on-the-Water.

Cold Aston has a long recorded history, even before the Domesday Book of 1086. In 716 to 743 the town was named Eastunae. By 1086, it was listed as Estone in the Domesday Book. This was derived from old English, which means East and farm, or estate. But the name of Cold Aston began in the 13th century, and stuck into the 21st century.

Many people soon called the village Great Aston, as there was a small hamlet nearby that was called Little Aston. The use of Aston Blank began about the 16th century. This may have come from the French word of blanc, meaning bare or white.

In 1972, the town was officially Cold Aston again. In Saxon, “old” may have meant a former settlement. It’s possible there was a Roman camp here. Many disregard the theory that Cold or Blank has anything to do with snow or other types of winter weather.

The village has an old Norman church. It’s walls are built of Saxon stonework, with a tall rectangular tower. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew, the Apostle. The church was originally built around 904, but had an extensive reconstruction done in 1875. Most of that remains today. Like most older churches, there is a small graveyard at its side.

There an story that there is a ghost in residence called Old Harry, at The Plough. This is a pub and hotel, and is in a listed building that was originally built in the 17th century. The village has one primary school, but older children must attend school in the other towns nearby.
