Whiteinch sits between the Scotstoun and Partick areas of Glasgow . The district is north of the river Clyde and originally started its life as an island (inch means island in scottish language). This was when the river ran wide and shallow - after the river was adjusted to make room for industry and shipbuilding, the island disappeared but the area kept its name.

The area has a strong connection with industries relating to the nearby water connections. In 1855 a shipbuilding yard was built and took up most of the whiteinch riverbank and later on Whiteinch also provided an important ferry crossing for the river clyde.

If you are visiting the area you won’t fall short for transport. There are buses running regularly through Whiteinch through to Glasgow. You can also walk along the Dumbarton road (for around 15 minutes!) to access the Partick rail and underground station.

The reason a lot of tourists visit this area is Victoria Park. Absolutely stunning in all weathers, this park plays host to many activities and interests. Depending on which time of year you visit, you can enjoy - an orienteering course, childrens play areas, tennis courts, basketball courts and a model yachting course to name just a few!
Visually the area has several gardens to stroll through and enjoy. There are also several areas of special interest such as - a pond (with bridges), a war memorial and a fully functional four - dial miniature lamp post clock.

The key attraction for the park is an area named ‘fossil grove ’. This area was discovered during the parks construction in the late 19th century. When the developers began to pave the road for the park a large area of rock was disturbed, unearthing fossilised tree trunks. Lepidodendron (also known as scale trees) are a now extinct form of tree - like plant. Some of these plants could reach 100 ft and they formed part of the coal forest flora and fauna. The park holds host to various events throughout the year including many educational walks and talks as well as larger events like the much loved indian summer music festival and the whiteinch fair festival.

In Whiteinch itself, the community centre (built in 2006) is a heartwarming icon representing the area. Created for local people, by local people, the centre is a real symbol for community spirit. It offers a wide range of services to the community such as - learning support and addictions support not to mention the sport and art activities on offer. For visitors, a real sense of the local area can be gained by popping in to the centre to enjoy refreshments in the cafe.
