Lying on high ground on the south side of the Cathkin Braes, East Kilbride is located about eight miles south-east of Glasgow and is near the boundary with East Renfrewshire. East Kilbride is enclosed by the White Cart River to the west and the Rotten Calder to the east.

History

Ancient graves found near the Kype Water to the south of the district mark evidence of the earliest habitation in the area. Apart from that, Roman coins and footwear have also been found.

The name East Kilbride comes from an Irish saint called St Bride who founded a monastery in Kildare, Ireland for nuns and monks in the 6th century.

It was designated as Scotland's first new town on 6 May 1947.

Landmarks

·    Dollan Aqua Centre. Includes facilities such as a swimming pool with moveable floor, health suite and fitness gym.

·    Hunter House Museum. Features exhibits relating to William and John Hunter, who were both born in the area and are medical pioneers.

·    Langland Moss. This is a local nature reserve that comprises a Lowland Raised Peat Bog which is a UK BAP priority habitat. There is a boardwalk where you can walk over the reserve to observe the wildlife.

·    Whitelee Windfarm. The largest on shore wind farm in Europe.

Leisure

The town centre of East Kilbride is occupied by a large shopping centre comprised of six malls. It's known by residents as “The Centre.” The malls are:

Activities

·    Cycling. Several busy roundabouts in East Kilbride feature underpasses for pedestrians and cyclists. The National Cycling Route 756 which connects East Kilbride and Ruthergelen with the City Boundary was opened on 19 June 2009.
