Flower Delivery to Castlemilk by Clare Florist
Castlemilk is a district in the southern part of the city of Glasgow , Scotland. It received its name in the 13th century when Sir William Stewart was given land to serve as preservation of peace on the marches between England and Scotland. He erected a castle on a hill top near and the Mylk and so the name Castlemilk came to be. Sir William Stewart and his brother John Stewart lived there for many years before they were killed in battle in 1429.
Matthew Stewart, who was Sir John’s son began purchasing lands known as Cassilton of Carmunnock and began the construction of a tower at Cassilton. The building was later extended and a room named after the queen of Scots. In 1957, the stewart family sold the lands and moved north, they subsequently changed the area known as Cassilton to Castlemilk.
After the Second World War, there was a severe housing crisis in Glasgow. Many of the inner areas had streets upon streets of sub standard tenement housing and there was a general shortage of quality accommodation in the city as a whole. However in the 1960’s, as plans by the city to provide cheap housing for its people, the Glasgow Corporation started to build multi-storey houses in Castlemilk. It was coordinated by Archibald George Jury, Glasgow’s first City Architect. He was especially responsible for the creation of tower blocks in Dougrie Road. Ravenshaft Properties developed the township centre between 1961 and 1963 and it was designed to contain about 60 shops, most of which are still in use till now. The center now contains the only pub in Castlemilk, The Oasis.
The Original Castlemilk house was redeveloped in 1991 into a playground. However in the course of the development, an archeological dig carried out uncovered a defensive ditch which was filled with materials such as pottery, bottle glass, bone and a clay pipe bone which dated the deposit to the 18th century.
