Looking back

Northop is said to be derived from North Hope, but some claim the name originated from North and Thorpe. In ancient records, it was written as Northorpe. It wasn’t until after the surrender of Chester to Egbert of Wessex that Northop was used.

Highlights

The most iconic and prominent feature of the village is the medieval church of St Eurgain and St Peter. Located at the centre, its 98-foot tower stands tall, dominating the skyline. Evidence showed a 6th-century church founded by Eurgain, a niece of Saint Asaph, while passing through Northop. During the 12th century, a stone church was built, but the tower was only completed in 1571. The present-day structure has gone through rebuilding and several alterations right up to 1877.

The village has two pubs - the Red Lion and The Boot, a golf course, cricket club, MOT garage, tea shop, hairdresser, and the last coaching inn. There used to be more shops and services, but gradually disappeared when neighbouring towns developed.

Nonetheless, whatever buildings are left provide a rich mix of structural styles and types that continue to evolve over the last 8 centuries.
If there’s one thing that the village is popularly known for, it will be the Northop Silver Band, a nationally recognised Championship Silver Band that was formed when a group of young men at Soughton in 1892 and made a commitment to play for a year. Following their success locally, the band had the opportunity to play in some of the most prestigious venues in the country, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. They’ve also performed in Germany. During a festival in Hamburg, they joined forces with another group from South Wales Parc and Dare Band.
