HISTORY

Limekilns was called Galletts during the 1300s and was the main port for the town of Dunfermline, which is located a few miles to its north. Given that fact, it wasn't always quiet in town back in the day.

The local limestone in the village was of importance for farming improvements and for mortar to build stone buildings. From this, an industry was established that used kilns fuelled by charcoal – then coal in later years – to convert lime to quicklime. This product was then shipped to the rest of eastern Scotland.

Today, the only remnant of the town's lime industry is it's name. The industry moved to neighbouring Charlestown in 1750 and still continues to operate to this day.

Limekilns was also home to other industries such as shipbuilding, soap making and brewing. It was also the northern point for a ferry that linked the town to Bo'ness on the south side of the Forth.

LANDMARKS

There are a few old structures in town, and these include:

King's Cellar – the oldest building in town. This was said to be used as a wine cellar by royalty who lived in Dunfermline. Although, if truth be told, it may have been more like a general warehouse because of the existence of a harbour.

Broomhall Estate – a mansion built by Alexander Bruce of Broomhall, the Earl of Elgin. This was his home from 1702 onwards. The current structure on the site was built by his descendant, Charles, the 5th Earl of Elgin, in the 1760s.
