History

Woodham Ferrers was formerly a hermitage, that is, there used to religious settlers in the community during the time of Henry II. It got its name after it became a priory in 1175.

Eleanor de Lovaine, then the widow of William de Ferrers of Groby, married William the Hardy, Lord of Douglas, thus, the manor of Woodham Ferrers was passed to the Scottih noble house during the late 13th century.

There was also a property owned by the Bishop of York in Woodham Ferrers. However, it was attacked in 1381 during the Peasant’s Revolt while in the 16th century, the convent was converted into a hospital but was also returned to the church.

Around six years ago, the village attracted the attention of the media nationwide. In 2011, the Christian Light and Life Festival was held and around 4,000 gypsies came. The locals were enraged because it resulted to rubbish and vandalism.
