History

It is said that Wicken Bonhunt ma have been two separate communities with its name derived from the Old English for dairy farm (wic) and huntsmen liable to be summoned (bann-huntan).

In the Domesday Book, Wicken Bonhunt is listed as the manors of Wica and Banhuta. In subsidy rolls in 1238, the village is referred to as Wykes Bonhunte.

The presence of the 10th- or 11th-century former Chapel of St Helen on the grounds of the Bonhunt Farm which is close to the M11 motorway flyover are some of the early signs of settlement in the area. The chapel is also said to be one of the oldest surviving structures in the east of England.

A middle Saxon settlement was also excavated in the fields located close to the Chapel in the 1970s when the M11 was constructed. Evidence of the structures unearthed show that it may have been a royal manor.
