The first mention of Maldon is in a document called the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. It is spelled “Maeldun,” in that document, which reveals that it was named for being a monument (mael) on a hill (dun). Because of its proximity to the Dengie peninsula, the area quickly became a trade center and started attracting artisans of all kinds. There was even a mint here, which produced coins for Anglo-Saxon and Norman royalty. During this time period, Maldon was the only major town in the area, and it is said to have hosted Kings when they were battling against settlers from other parts of the country.

One of the most significant early battles for this area include skirmishes with Viking raiding parties and fights with Danish settlers. In order to earn the right to govern itself, Maldon sent a warhorse and ship to the King’s army. Because of this, it was given its own charter in 1171. It was around this same time that the All Saints’ Church was built, which is significant because of its triangular tower, which is the only one of its kind in all of England. There is also a window in this church commemorating George Washington, whose family has ties to this area. The church features windows that display the Mayflower landing, the singing of the Declaration of Independence, and Joan of Arc. Another significant landmark in Maldon is St. Peter’s Church, which is currently home to the Plume Library, which is an extensive collection of seventeenth century literature.

When the French planned to invade Britain in 1744, it was at Maldon that they decided to land. The ships were wrecked by storms before they could land, however.
