The earliest mention of Buckhurst Hill comes in 1135 as La Bocherste, the name then transitioning to an anglicized pronunciation of Bucket Hill in later years. Through most of its history, the town was little more than stage coach stop within Epping Forrest between London and Cambridge, but in 1865 the train lines came through and development took off.

In 1838 the parish house of St. John was built as a chapel of ease, becoming a fully ecclesiastical church in 1867.
