History

The name Craigmillar comes from the Scottish Gaelic, Crag Maol Ard which means “High Bare Rock” and was established many centuries ago, although much of the town today is quite new. The most prominent landmark is Craigmillar Castle which was built in the late 14th century and was occupied until the early 18th century. The large estate which the castle stood was purchased by Sir John Gilmour in 1660 and the surrounding communities were flourishing as the larger city of Edinburgh grew.

After the turn of the 20th century, there were different housing acts established to help grow the town and alleviate the housing issue which had become a rising concern. In addition, there were at least seven breweries established in the open countryside between Craigmillar and Duddingston along an aquafer and near a rail line so that the product could be shipping to other parts of the UK. For the next several decades, the breweries provided many jobs to the people of the nearby towns until they fell out of favour, mostly in the mid-1960s and closed their doors.

Craigmillar Today

The town is not run by the Edinburgh city council which has gone to great lengths to help modernize Craigmillar. Until recently, most of the town consisted of post-war housing projects that included high-rise tower and many private bungalows. That is all being changed by new housing which is helping to expand the choices for the residents.

The centrepiece of the town is Craigmillar Castle which is now run by the Historic Environment Scotland and has been beautifully preserved. The historic importance of the castle is not just its age, but its association with Mary, Queen of Scots who convalesced in the castle after giving birth to her son, who became James VI. For tourists, the castle is a popular attraction given how well it has been persevered which provides a glimpse into the medieval times.

Craigmillar itself is a vibrant town that offers the typical shopping, restaurant, and clubbing experience that people expect from the Edinburgh area. For many, it’s a great place to visit and see the castle as part of their trip to the region.
