South Heighton is a small village with over 990 residents. It’s a civil parish in the Lewes District of East Sussex, and located on the southeastern part of England. It’s close to Lewes, just twelve kilometres away. The village had only 100 residents in the 1890s, until a cement manufacturing business opened up and the town grew to 500 residents. Today, South Heighton is considered a part of the urban area of the town of Newhaven.

The South Heighton Parish Council governs the village. The Council meets in the local village hall. The Council are responsible for looking after the footpaths of the town, the street lighting, playgrounds, and other planning.

The South Heighton village hall was originally built in 1860, and was initially used for a school. It was built of local flint. It had only one classroom, with an attached residence for the School Master. After the cement factory was built, the school had an addition for another classroom. The building was used for a school until 1969. After it closed it was left in trust to the villagers. It then became a private residence. Today, it’s the Village Hall. The money raised for meeting rentals is used for the upkeep of the building.

South Heighton was used during WWII for defence. It has many secret tunnels located under most of the village. One notable tunnel has an entrance at Denton House. After the war, Denton House was turned into flats, with houses built around it. They named the road Forward Close, which was a ship associated with Newhaven, called the HMS Forward. The tunnels are still being explored before they become too dangerous.

There is no North part of Heighton, though there is a Heighton Hill, located northeast of the village. The village is a popular spot for walkers and hikers. There are three ponds located in this area, which are called “The Three Lakes” by the residents. These ponds used to be open to the public, but are fenced in now.

There used to be a post office in the village, but it’s since been converted into a house.

The villagers enjoy many annual events organized by their bonfire society, with celebrations, bonfire marches, parades, fireworks, and a village fete.

The village has had some notable residents. Ralph Reader used to live here. He was the creator of the Scouting Gang Show. Ursula Mommens also lived here. She had the distinction of being the great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin, and the great-great-granddaughter of Josiah Wedgwood who grandfather of Charles and Emma Darwin. Wedgwood was a potter who lived from 1730 to 1795, and was the man responsible for founding the famous Wedgwood company.
