A mile inland to the north is an original settlement, Portslade Village, which was built in East Sussex in the 16th century. When the railway from Brighton arrived in 1840, rapid development of the coastal area was encouraged. History

It has been suggested that Portslade is the Roman port Novus Portus mentioned in Ptolemy's Geography of the 2nd Century AD. Drove Road, the original Portslade Village, has been associated with the Roman road passing through Patcham Valley to Haywards Heath and on so Streatham in London.

Copperas Gap, the old name for Portslade-by-Sea, suggests that the coast was used for the production of copperas or green vitriol, which is a kind of ferrous sulphate used in the textile industry.

Attractions

Parish Church of St Nicolas – located in Portslade Village and dates back to 1150.

Portslade Manor – one of the surviving ruins of a Norman manor. Built during the 12th century, it's now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The structure is Grade II listed.

Foredown Tower – houses a camera obscura, one of two in the south of England. It's a former water tower for Foredown Hospital, an isolation sanatorium for those with infectious diseases. The camera obscura was installed in the cupola at the top of the tower, and it projects images of the surrounding area to a dish below. The tower opened to the public in 1991.

Monarch's Way – follows the seafront west in Portslade-by-Sea towards Shoreham. It's a 615-mile long-distance footpath that is an approximation of the escape route taken by King Charles II after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651.
