By the time of the Domesday survey of 1086, it had become a fishing and farming village. Although vulnerable to attacks from the sea, the town grew steadily over the course of the centuries.

By the 18th century, a renewed interest in the Brighton area caused it to attract more residents and its population began to grow at a much faster pace. By the Victorian era, it became a popular seaside resort and truly flourished. Today, it is still growing and attracting people of different cultures and interests.
