Auldhame Castle may be in ruins and nothing much may be known about it, but it’s still wonderful to ponder on a structure with links to the history of not just a small hamlet but an entire country. It was built by the Otterburns during the 15th or 16th century but any other information about it is lost. Not a lot is known about how it came to ruin either. It is open to the public, but care must be taken as the structure isn’t in good condition.
Seacliff is, without question, one of the best sights you can see in East Lothian and is only a short drive from Auldhame. From the parking area, you can take a path that brings you the eastern portion of Seacliff beach’s broad sweep. This eastern portion leads all the way to St Baldred’s Boat, which you can identify by a stone beacon topped by a cross.

Look out for the ruins of Seacliff House, a still imposing 18th-century structure despite the dilapidated state, while walking along the beach. Continue walking along towards the end of the beach to be rewarded with views of Tantallon Castle (which is also a short drive from the beach), a formidable structure sitting on the edge of the cliffs and a former stronghold of the Douglas family. Another thing you shouldn’t miss while at the beach are the views of Bass Rock, a bird sanctuary on the Firth of Forth.
