Around 1860, the town really came into its own as a mining community. William Baird & Co. came to the area and one of the first villages was established in order to house the new miners living around the Twechar No.1 pit. Early railways were also installed in the area, beginning the early development of Twechar as an industrial hub. Such was the start of about one hundred years of coal mining in the area.
Several churches were built in the area to support the new population of miners and their families, including the Twechar parish church, which represents the Church of Scotland for the area.
