History

The name Dalrymple comes from the Scottish Gaelic language and the word means “flat field of the crooked pool or river.” The community was first established in 1800 and by that time, there were two streets, Main Street and Garden Street.

Dalrymple grew slowly up until the late 20th century which was when council housing was built to house families from coal-mining villages.

Crossraguel Abbey – a ruin of a former abbey that was founded in 1244 by Donnchadh, Earl of Carrick. The ruins that remain are the church, the cloister, the chapter house and the domestic premises.

Culzean Castle & Country Park – former home of the Marquess of Ailsa, the chief of the Clan Kennedy. This time, it's in the possession of the National Trust for Scotland. The structure and its location is a visually arresting sight – surrounded by seas, lush forests and secret gardens.
