Flower Delivery to Ecclefechan with Clare Florist
Ecclefechan is a quiet village with historical value. The Ecclefechan Hotel for instance, which is the white-painted structure that dominates the main junction in the village, started life during the 1730s – it was later converted into a coaching inn.
Stagecoaches that linked Glasgow and London would stop in town starting in 1788. These diligences – as they were called – left Glasgow at midnight and arrived in London about six days later.
It was due to this coaching traffic that made the village important during the 1800s where it saw 12 fairs per year, which is more than anywhere else in southern Scotland.
Today, it has two shops, a hairdresser, a church, a doctors' surgery and a primary school. There are also three hotels in the village: the Ecclefechan Hotel, Cressfield Hotel and Kirkconnel Hall Hotel.
Knowing that you've got comfortable accommodations in town, you can always plan a romantic getaway in this part of Dumfries and Galloway. Of course, it would be more romantic if you presented your partner with some Ecclefechan flowers. If you can't get them here, you can always send flowers to Ecclefechan.
HISTORY
During the early Middle Ages, Ecclefechan lay within the British kingdom of Rheged. The name Ecclefechan is derived from the Brythonic for “small church.” When Gaelic became more used in the area, it was believed that the name of the village was derived from St Fechin of Fore of the 7th century.
ECCLEFECHAN TODAY
Ecclefechan feels rather left behind by history. This is partly due to being bypassed by the A74 and the M74. The West Coast Main Line Railway – which put the coaches out of business from 1847 – still passes to the east of the village, but the station in the village has been closed since the 1960s.
Although this is the case, there are still interesting bits and pieces about the village in every nook and cranny. That and it being the birthplace of Thomas Carlyle make it a destination that wouldn't soon be forgotten.
PLACES OF INTEREST
The Arched House – the birthplace of Thomas Carlyle. Since 1936, the house has been maintained by the National Trust for Scotland.
Hoddom Castle – a caravan and holiday park located 2 miles from the village centre. You might even spot some flowers in Ecclefechan or more.
NOTABLE RESIDENTS
Thomas Carlyle – essayist, satirist and historian. He was born in Ecclefechan on 4 December 1795 at The Arched House. Although he moved to Craigenputtock, he insisted that Ecclefechan be his final resting place. He got his wish and was buried in Ecclefechan churchyard on 5 February 1881.
Archibald Arnott – Napoleon's doctor on St Helena. Like Carlyle, he too returned to the place of his birth and was buried in the Ecclefechan churchyard.
James Bryson McLachlan – born in Ecclefechan, but migrated to Nova Scotia where he became a noted figure in Labour and a member of the Communist Party.
