Sutton Poyntz is a tiny village in Dorset situated very close to Preston, and in fact, belongs to the parish of Preston. It is an ill-defined Dorset village because its boundaries are often unnoticeable. History

Before the Poyntz family held the manor, the village was known only as Sutton. Nicholas, the last male member of the Poyntz family, was born in 1320, knighted in 1353, and died in 1376. Nicholas passed on the manor to his daughter, Margaret, and son-in-law, John Newburgh. Edward Weld became the last person to hold the manor in 1867. Sutton Poyntz was incorporated into the Borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis in 1933.

Landmarks

Sutton Poyntz is a hidden gem nestled behind the hills with the chalk carvings of the White Horse. Though small, it is surprisingly auspicious. It has ruins from the Roman and Bronze Age, which have become a spectacle among tourists.

Sutton Road - located at the centre of the village, around the pub and duck pond. Here, you can find the restored Sutton Mill (1815) with its original machinery, and the Mill Pond dotted with so many flowers in Sutton Poyntz and wildlife. The south Sutton Road leads to Preston, and the spot of the boundary stone.

Silver Street – a scenic footpath by the stream with attractive cottages as the background like Laurel Cottage, Albert Cottage, Ebenezer Cottage and Rose Cottage, built as early as the 18th century.

Mission Hall Lane - a narrow road between Sutton Road and Plaisters Lane. It is the best route to visit the former sites of market gardens in the 60s, as well as footpaths covered in deep green grasses and bushes of Sutton Poyntz flowers.

Plaisters Lane – an uphill road towards Dorchester passes two prominent structures, Prospect House and Prospect Cottage. At the northern junction lies the car parking for the Sutton Poyntz Street Fayre, and a vast field called Court Close.

Puddledock Lane – is the street parallel with the stream as it flows southwards. It passes a collection of Victorian cottages, The Old Bakery and the Dairy House. On a Saturday afternoon in July, the Sutton Poyntz Society holds Cream Tea, while in August, the Mission Hall Committee holds Village Barbecue in the garden at the back of Mission Hall. Sutton Poyntz flowers make the events more festive.

Also in July each year is the notorious Vegetable Show wherein farmers compete for the heaviest, longest and biggest vegetables. Also in the competition is the contest for a bunch of flowers.
