History

Tristram Risdon, the historian of Devon, believed the name Weare was derived from a fish weir which was located in the river to catch fish. A license from the feudal overlord was needed in order to construct the fish weir as it affected the catches of other residents living further along the river. Disputes over fish weirs were documented in medieval records as well.

Weare Giffard was a former manor but it declined over the years. But the church and manor house still stand today and are located about 2½ miles north-west of Great Torrington. A lot of the houses within the parish are also located about ½ mile east of the church.

Owners of the manor include the Giffard family which passed on to the de Wear family. After that, the Denzell family were owners then the Fortescue family. The manor of Weare Giffard was sold by Lady Elizabeth Baxendale in 1960.

There are lots of interesting attractions in Weare Giffard, including:

Holy Trinity Church and graveyard – the church is a designated Grade I listed building. A Fortescue mural monument is on the south wall of the south aisle of the church; it was erected in 1638 by Hugh Fortescue. The north wall of the chancel also features the chest tomb of Eleanor Fortescue, the fifth daughter of Hugh Fortescue.

Apart from these attractions, lovers of outdoors will enjoy the river walks, village walks and forest trails in the area. There is also a village playground and cricket ground that can be used.
