Sheepstor is a village and civil parish in Devon that’s located on the western side of Dartmoor and lies at the south of the Burrator Reservoir. The parish along with the nearby parishes of Walkhampton and Meavy form the Burrator Ward for electoral purposes and the Burrator Parish Council for administrative purposes.

A Brief History of Sheepstor

The village and parish are named after Sheeps Tor, a nearby rock formation that’s located half a mile from the village and rises 369 meters above sea level. There are actually several tors in the area, but Sheeps Tor is one of the most prominent and easily visible outcrops.

The name “Sheeps Tor”, though, doesn’t really refer to sheep. Experts believe that it’s derived from the Old English word “scyttel”, which means “bolt” or “bar” and most likely refers to the shape of Sheeps Tor when viewed from certain angles. Over the years, the name of the village and parish has been spelled “Sitelestorra” (in the 1168 Pipe Roll), “Schetelestorre”, “Schitelestor”, “Sytelestorre”, and “Scitelstor”, among others.

Modern Sheepstor
Even though Sheepstor isn’t as popular as other tourist destinations, it has a wide range of attractions that you can explore. As a result, it’s hard to feel bored when you spend a couple of days in the village or parish since there are lots of things you can do.

If you love walking or hiking, for example, you can set aside a day to explore Sheeps Tor as well as the other outcrops in the area. It contains a reconstruction of the 16th century rood screen that was removed during a 19th century restoration; there were fortunately many detailed drawings of the screen, so the local vicar was able to make a precise replica in 1914. The churchyard, meanwhile, contains the graves of James Brooke and his two descendants, who were collectively called the three White Rajahs of Sarawak.
