The historic estate of Hudscott is located in the village and civil parish of Chittlehampton, which is located in the North Devon district of Devon, England. Hudscott is one of three historic estates located within the village of Chittlehampton, the others being Brightley and Hawkridge.

Hudscott became the seat of the junior branch of the Rolles, an influential family from Heanton Satchville, from 1700. By 1779, it also became the secondary seat of the senior Rolle family of Stevenstone who were the then largest landowners in Devon.

HISTORY

The Hudscott estate derives its name from before the Norman Conquest of 1066. The name meant cott of the Saxon cottar called Hudda. By the 13th century, the estate was one of the 10 freeholdings within the manor of Chittlehampton and was listed in the Assize Roll of 1281.

The Venner family were the first known to have resided at Hudscott. The owners belonging to this family are as follows: Robert Venner, William I Venner, Humphry Venner and William II Venner.

The estate was next owned by the Lovering family and succession was as follows: John I Lovering and John II Lovering.

The Rolle family then took ownership of the estate and the owners were as follows: Samuel I Rolle, Samuel II Rolle, Denys III Role and John Rolle, 1st Baron Rolle.
