HISTORY

The old village of Tichenhalle probably existed during the Anglo-Saxon times. That same village was also mentioned in the Domesday Book. About two centuries ago, Ticknall was larger and noisier thanks to the presence of lime quarries, tramways and potteries.

At its height, Ticknall reached had a population of over 1,000 but all that changed when the neighbouring Calke Abbey changed their status from a private occupation to a semi-public administration.

ATTRACTIONS

Water pumps – found on lanes throughout the village. Some of these pumps still work and are used by walkers. These devices – made of cast iron – were introduced by Sir Harper Crewe in 1914 to provide fresh water.

St George's Church – a Grade II listed parish church. A pipe organ by J.W. Walker dating back to 1869 is contained within the church.

Ticknall Walk – walking this route takes you through the rolling South Derbyshire countryside where you get to see the Calke Abbey up close.
