HISTORY

The village got its name from John Hoddings, the man who planned the village. “Hod” was taken from his name while “thorpe” – which is the Anglo-Saxon term for “village” was added on.

Following the first sinking of mine shafts at Whitwell, a neighbouring village, the village of Hodthorpe was founded. It was 1804 and there was already growing resentment in Whitwell over the arrival of coal miners in large numbers. The Welbeck Abbey ultimately agreed to found the village of Hodthorpe. The village was built on the local branch railway line and had its own halt.
