History

Heanor's name is derived from the Old English hēan and ofer which means “(place at) the high ridge.” The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and was recorded as Hainoure.

A Topographical Dictionary of England by Samuel Lewis, published in 1848, describes Heanor as a town that “abounds with coal and ironstone, both worked extensively, the collieries alone affording employment to more than 2000 persons.” It goes on the describe Heanor as “pleasantly situated upon an eminence, on the road from Derby to Mansfield.”
