The name of Creswell is often known in association with the coal mining industry, in particular the unfortunate accident at the Creswell Colliery in 1950, where over 80 men lost their lives. The mining industry began in the village in the late 19th century and transformed the area from a small farming community to a large, industrial one. This success led to much expansion including population and housing growth throughout the early 20th century. Creswell Colliery was owned by the larger Bolsover Collier Company until 1947 when Creswell Colliery became publicly owned by the English government. The company was well-known for the social activities and support of its workers, including hosting a popular brass band that gave concerts throughout England and often appeared on the national BBC radio.

In addition to the social support, Creswell Colliery built a housing development for their workers and their families in 1895. Named Creswell Model Village, the ten-acre development continued to grow as the mining industry expanded into the 1950s, with a total of about 280 homes. Many of the buildings are Arts and Crafts design and the layout is based on an oval garden village design. Most impressive are the modern amenities that have been part of Creswell Model Village from the beginning, including electricity and a tramway system that delivered coal to each house. When the mining industry declined, so did the village, but within recent years many of the homes were restored and new community members now call them home.
