The small village of Atlow is a civil parish located in Derbyshire County, England. More specifically, it is in the Derbyshire Dales local government district of the county. The closet town is Belper, which is eight miles to the east of Atlow. The name of the village comes from an Old English word that means “hill.” In the Domesday Book of 1086, Atlow is recorded as being owned by Aelfric of Bradbourne. The book listed the value of the village as being worth £1 in 1066. Then 20 years later, the value went down to £0.1 and was taken over by Henry de Ferrers. Since the village only contained about 4 acres of meadowland, it wasn’t worth much in those days. As the years went on, the population slightly increased after the Atlow Church was built. The whole village remained as part of the Bradbourne parish until 1866 when it became its own civil parish. Then right around the same time the National Mixed School was built. However, it didn’t start getting great attendance until the year 1891. At this point there were about 33 students in the entire school. The school is no longer active now because of the low population of the village.

According to a 2001 census, the total population of the village is about 98 people. When you consider the village is at least 900 years old, this is not a large number by any means.
