Grinsdale, a village, resides within the parish of Beaumont, located in the City of Carlisle and the English county of Cumbria.

Grinsdale sits beside the Eden River located nearby Carlisle. The close proximity of the river encouraged farming around the village, since the surrounding soil tended to be both rich and loamy.

A Brief History

Several marching camps belonging to the Roman military used to be set up in the area during centuries past. In addition, weaving and linen manufacture formerly provided employment in the area.

The village, centuries ago, gave notoriety to a family who had once held the village under Barony of Burgh. A younger brother continued the male line of the Grinsdale family, his posterity representing the city and country within the parliament. In time, the elder line failed to continue, following the marriage of its co-heiresses to figures Le-Sor and Newton. Its co-heiresses eventually selling off their Grinsdale lands to the Dentons, who later sold the lands to the Lowthers around the year of 1686. Eventually, the estate ended up with the Earl of Lonsdale, as part of his Barony of Burgh.

Newton lands were then transferred through Newton's line, through successive marriages to the Martindale and Dacre line, eventually ending granted to the hands of the Dacre family of Kirklinton through a sale.

Landmarks

Grinsdale hosts a church known as the St Kentigern's Church. It was originally built during 1740, outside the village on the plot of a formerly existing 12th century church. By 1895, the church was given a restoration to improve its condition at the time. The St Kentigern's Church hosts a three bay nave, a small west tower and a two bay chancel featuring arched windows.

Nearby Grinsdale is Hadrian's Wall Path, which passes by the church, right along the route to Bowness-on-Solway from Carlisle. Hadrian's Wall Milecastle 69 is considered to have lied somewhere close to the village.
