Great Ormside was the former seat of the Viking warrior Orm from whom the village’s name was derived. The churchyard is home to an ancient cross socket that is as old as 1643. An art treasure that originates from Great Ormside is the Ormside Bowl; that was found in early 19th Century. It is a unique piece of Saxon metalwork gilded in silver and stone that dates back to 9th century. Today Ormside Bowl can be viewed in the York Museum.

A famous historical monument that still stands in the village is Ormside Hall. It is a huge tower that was built in 14th century and was used to guard the ford across River Eden. Barnard Castle Meet

It is one of the most awaited events in Great Ormside, Cumbria. The meet takes place usually on Monday when it is a bank holiday and shows true British spirit. Events take place throughout the week on a field that is down the river. Here, families have an exciting time by listening to live music, watching comedians and eating delicious food on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The awaited attraction of this event however is the procession of floats that leave the glaxo area on the top of the town and then comes down the main road.
