Brough is a small Cumbrian Village on the Foot of the North Pennines. Both a village and civil parish, Brough rose to fame back in the day as a staging post for travellers headed for the north of England. History

Brough lies on the site of a Roman fort called Verterae, which is located on the northern portion of Watling Street that links Carlisle and York. The rectangular fort once stretched to the south of Swindale Beck, a Cumbrian stream flowing along Swindale before joining the River Lowther near Rosgill. Today, the area occupied by the fort is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Brough Castle, which still stands today, was built within the northern area of the fort, in the 11th century.

Brough was historically divided into north (Market Brough) and south (Church Brough). A physical division between the two areas was made in 1977 with the construction of the bypass dual carriageway, which took the A66 road away from the village’s main street.

Attractions

Seeing the two different sides of Brough (the north and the south) is quite a fun activity. You’ll find houses built around a market square in Church Brough while you’ll see a main street that is wide and long in Market Brough.

You will also surely see some age-old structures thank to the long history of Brough. A sandstone church built in 1150 called St Michael’s Church can be found in Church Brough. Standing on a ridge on Stainmore Pass is the impressive Brough Castle, a regular target of Scottish raids that now mostly lies in ruin and is open to visitors.

Those who want to see Brough flowers can time their visit during the Brough Agricultural Show in August or hope for many flowers in Brough at the Farmer’s Market held every third Saturday of the month. Brough is a gateway to the Upper Eden Valley, the Howgills, and the Lake District.

Lying on the A66 trans-Pennine road, you can follow the path leading to Appleby-in-Westmoreland, home of the privately owned Appleby Castle that was home to the Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century and the annual Appleby Horse Fair held in June.
You can also take the scenic B6276 road which takes you to Alston, passing High Force Waterfall, which is said to be England’s highest unbroken fall of water at 21 metres.
