The historic town of Dungannon

Dungannon is the third largest town in Northern Ireland's Country Tyrone with an ancient history and a modern outlook.

The main stronghold of the O'Neills until the 14th century, Dungannon was once a centre of great importance but only the ruins of the old castle still survive although the story of the O'Neills, Kings of Ulster, is interwoven with that of the town throughout history.

Now Dungannon looks forward to the future attracting tourists with ancient charm and modern attractions. Moygashel Mills, one of the famous mills from the days of the Irish linen industry has taken on a new identity as The Linen Green, a craft, design and factory outlet that attracts visitors and shopper from across the country.

The Servite Priory outside the town is a former 19th century manor house that was a hospital for English and American servicemen during the war. It has, since 1947, been a priory and conference centre and is set in beautiful grounds with a forest, river, bridges and graveyard for visitors to explore. Dungannon Park is a seventy acre oasis with a magnificent still-water lake and has become one of the finest municipal parklands in Ireland with trout fishing, lakeside and glen walks and cycle trails.

A major feature of the town centre is the former fort-like police barracks in the corner of the market square. A building of such an unusual design in Northern Ireland, the story is told that the building's plans were confused with those of a station designed to be built at the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan.There are several markets held in Dungannon market square including a farmers' market and the wholesale Dungannon flowers market every Thursday.

Dungannon's most famous son professional golfer Darren Clarke, who learned his skills on the town's golf course, won the Open Championship in 2011, his first Major win after twenty years at the top of his sport.
