South Moor is a village in County Durham in North East England, located to the south-west of Stanley. It is famous for its golf course and for being a former vibrant mining village. A Brief History of South Moore

The name of the village comes from the area which was known as the south moor of Beamish. The area stretched from Beamish almost to Annfield Plain and was classified as a wasteland at one time. But the discovery of coal in the area quickly brought in migrants and developments. Along with miners and their families, shops, churches, schools, cinemas, and hotels popped up.   

Even if it is well developed, it is still semi-rural. There are twelve shops on the main street, known as Park Road, which have survived even if more modern stores opened up nearby. The original street scape of the village remains in place, so you can still see the long brick colliery Terraces erected between 1900 and 1910 by the South Moor Mining Company.

1. South Moor Memorial Park

Many miners living in the Terraces were conscripted or volunteered to serve in World War I. The South Moor Colliery created the memorial park to honour and remember the fallen soldiers from the village. 2. South Moor Golf Club

The course is designed by Alister MacKenzie and boasts of a stunning county championship venue, with a layout and holes that will challenge golfers. 3. Causeway Arch

This bridge near Stanley is the oldest surviving single-arch railway bridge in the world. You can take a stroll on one of the scenic public paths around the area and the Causey Burn (which runs underneath the arch). Rock climbers also enjoy climbing the quarry near the bridge.

4. Waskerly Way Bike Path

Enjoy breathtaking scenery, fresh air, and some exercise as you cycle your way through the bike path that passes through woodland and open moorland. It follows the old Stanhope and Tyne Railway line, and it can also be used for walking.
