Kelloe is a small village located in northeast England. It is also a civil parish that belongs to the County Durham. Kelloe is located only few miles south-east of Durham. Those who have visited this village have probably noticed the many structures and items in and around Kelloe that remind people of the Industrial era when quarrying and coal mining were the most important industries in this region.

What is interesting is that Kelloe has much richer history that can be traced in the Bronze Age. Only a couple of miles from the last houses of this village, archeologists have found tools from this age – arrowheads used by ancient hunters. The village became bigger during the medieval age. This is the period when the first church and water mill were built. As we have mentioned before this area was important in the industrial era because of the coal and quarry reserves. Many people from this area lost their lives during the WWI and WWII. The most famous person born in this village is Elizabeth Barrett Browning – a poet and writer.

Kelloe is located 272 miles northeast of London. Drivers can use A1 and A1 (M) road to get there in less than 5 hours. They can also use the A1 (M) and M1 too.

St. Helen Church

This is one of the oldest and most interesting churches in this area in County Durham. This parish church was built in the early 12th century. It comes with unique chancel, nave and tower. Visitors can also notice the small chantry on the nave. A very interesting stone cross can be noticed on the church wall. It dates back from the 12th century. The church was renovated several times.

Durham Castle

This castle is only 5 miles north of Kelloe. It was built in 1072 and one of the few castles that was never captured by the Scots. Those who want to visit this castle should look for information about openings hours because it is not available for visitors during the entire year.

Kelloe is the home of several interesting sculptures inspired by mine workings. They form an amazing wildlife corridor.
