Lisburn, Northern Ireland

South west of Belfast, located on the River Lagan is the Northern Ireland city of Lisburn. Within the Belfast metropolitan area, Lisburn was previously a borough but as a result of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002 was granted city status. Northern Ireland's third largest city, Lisburn has a population of around 72,000.

Lisburn began life on what is now Hill Street overlooking the River Lagan. To the north of where today's Castle Gardens reside was once a fort. Lisburn's central streets were laid out in the 1620s and the city has become one of the areas main shopping centres with more than 70 stores in the Bow Street Mall and a good selection of independent and well known high street establishments in the pedestrianised city centre. These include florists providing flowers delivered to Lisburn and the surrounding areas. The city is also well provisioned with cafes, restaurants and bars.

A few moments from the city centre there are two significant retail parks which due to their position on the Dublin-Belfast corridor attract shoppers from miles around. Lisburn is also remarkable for its 134 churches and a lovely cathedral.

Educationally, the city is abundant in primary schools in particular and boasts three colleges including one which was formally the Lisburn Institute. The Lagan Valley Hospital and Lisburn Health Centre are the primary healthcare organisations in the area.

Transport is plentiful in the city with the railway station providing a popular link between the city and Belfast, just 10 to 15 minutes by express train. There are also direct links to Bangor , Dublin, Lurgan, Moira and Portadown. Ulsterbus also operates a wide reaching local bus service as well as connections to Belfast, other towns and rural areas. Lisburn's favourable position on the Dublin-Belfast corridor also lends itself to easy access to the road network, notably the M1 and A1.
