Alva is a small town between Menstrie and Tillicoultry in Clackmannanshire, Scotland.  It forms part of the towns that constitute the Hillfoots villages. There are many shops in Alva, a few pubs, a library and a medical facility. There are also two beautiful parks which are the Johnstone Park and the Cochrane Park which houses the local Cochrane hall. Some of Alva's attractions include the McArthur Braes, a once neglected park that has been refurbished and open to the public, the golf course, Stirling Street, war memorial and the Lady Aberdeen home.  

The town developed quickly between the 18th and 19th century with the coming of the Alva Burn powered textile mills which provided jobs for locals and migrants coming to the area. Today, there are a number of prominent buildings in Alva such as the Strude mill, a former wollen mill that has now been converted to a block of flats. There is the old mill trail center near Cochrane Park and housed in the Old Glentana mill which was built in 1887. It houses permanent exhibitions which display what the old wollen industry looked like.

Attractions

Mill Trail and Visitor Centre - You can walk into the Ochills through Alva Glen as you are coming from Alva.  It offers a special glimpse into the areas past. Its geological history featured molten lavas, huge earth movements and glaciers, today the area is now a place for peaceful walks through its lush vegetations and beautiful waterfalls. The remnants of the once famous Clackmannanshire wollen industry abound in the area. They are still visible around the burns and waterfalls and tell the story of the old wollen industry.

The Alva Glen - Alva Glen is situated just above Alva at the foot of the Ochills. There is a car park which gives access to the formal gardens managed by the Alva Glen Heritage Trust. It was once a great tourist attraction to people living all around Scotland and even foreigners. They would come from all over to enjoy the illuminated glen and dance to music there. There is a steep gorge to the north of the gardens known to have powered nine mills with its fast flowing water in the mid 19th century.  There is presence of widelife in Alva Glen. The area is now fenced all round to keep sheeps out. This is to allow vegetation to grow. This means wild flowers can flourish and trees can grow with no sheep to eat them.

Events

Alva Games - The Famous Alva Games are the last surviving sports and games to be run in Clackmannanshire. The games are held on the second Saturday of July every year and it is the highlight of the town’s summer events. The games feature a range of traditional events which include Cycling, athletics, heavy weight, Highland dancing and it is crowned by the four hill races run over torry all the way to the British Championship Hill Race run which starts at about 4:15pm. There are also special races for children as well as adults, a fun fair that runs before and through the games and a 5 aside football tournament hosted prior to the games.

Gorge Walking in Alva - This event which is usually held in July is a family friendly event that offers a mix of land and water based activities.  The event is a great opportunity to explore Alva burns closely with a fun albeit tedious journey through pools, scrambling over boulders and under water falls. It’s all Exciting stuff! The event is headed by leaders and participants come with clothing that will be worn under wetsuits which will be provided. The minimum age for the event is 12 years while children are accompanied by parents or guardians on the walk.
