Blacon is a large suburb in Chester, England that originally began as a small village. There is a mix of residential homes in this area, and at one time it had one of the largest council housing estates located in Europe. There were 13,626 people living in this suburb as of the 2011 UK census record. Blacon is located in Cheshire in the upper west side of England, near the border of Wales. This village was built on a large hill that used to be farming land. It’s surrounded by country side.

Blacon used to be called Blakon Hill and was owned by the Marquess of Crewe. In 1923 the Parish of Blacon cum Crabwall was formed. In 1936, most of the parish was transferred to the Chester Country Borough. The village remained a farming community until major building construction occured in the 1950s. The Parade Shops are located in north Blacon and were built in 1954.

The Holy Trinity Without the Walls Church is located in Blacon. You can also see the upper portions of the Chester Cathedral when viewed from a distance. From Blacon you also have views to the city centre of Chester, and even parts of Wales.

Some other close places to Blacon that are notable to visit include Upton by Chester located to the village’s north, Mollington and Saughall to the northwest, and Saltney to the south. Blacon is also close to the Wirral peninsula, and also close to the village of Overpool.

During WWII, the village had the Blacon Camp maintained by the army in the southern portion of the village. Soldiers used to live in wooden huts until the late 1950s. Prisoners and aircraft were held in this area. Portions of the firing range remained until the mid-1960s. Around the 1960s, tower block buildings were built on site and no more huts remained. The local residents used to call this area “The Camp”. It’s considered a wealthier part of town, with many elderly residing here. There are also several schools in this region, a library, and stores.

The Blacon Cemetary began in 1940, where many plots were set aside for service burials. It also contains 461 Commonwealth service personnel, and 100 war graves of other nationalities.

In the past the Blacon railway station was here, but it shut down in 1968. Freight trains ran sporadically until the last journey in the early 1990s. In the location where the old railway station and railway line used to lay is now a long tarmac road. This is a path for cyclists, joggers, and walkers. People can reach this path by the side of the Blacon station bridge. The path also joins to many other paths. A lot of nature revitalization has been done in this area over the past couple of years.
