Tregaron is a market town located in the county of Ceredigion in central Wales, in the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains. It’s designation as a market town dates back to its medieval beginnings and was a legal term that gave the town permission to host a market within the village. Today it is probably most well-known as a centre for “Trotian”- horse trotting and carriage racing.
Tregaron’s market distinction began in the early days of its incorporation, back in 1292, when agriculture was flourishing, but reached the height of its popularity in the 19th century. It was built in 1822 to service farmers and drovers on their way through the area and offers one of the most peaceful spots in the area. In town, the Rhiannon Celtic Design Centre is a spot to check out for their jewellery and arts and crafts creations that are made in the Welsh tradition and style.

The horse and carriage racing remains a big draw in Tregaron and the annual harness racing festival held every August brings people to the town from all over the world. There are additional races held throughout the year, but the annual August event is perhaps the most popular. The town also hosts an annual cultural festival every September, eisteddfod, a celebration of Welsh literature, music, and performances. A more recent festival, Bro Tregaron Walking Festival, celebrates walking and features many lovely locations within the town during the month of May.

Cors Caron Nature Reserve, also known as Tregaron Bog, offers plentiful opportunities to enjoy flora and fauna, as well as ample bird watching, with over 170 species of birds recorded, including the red kite, a bird that was nearly extinct at one time. The River is well-stocked with brown trout and eel, among other fish species.
