HISTORY

Penparcau has been inhabited for thousands of years. There is evidence that Tan-y-Bwlch, which is located at the foot of Pen Dinas, was used as a flint knapping floor for hunter-gatherers during the Mesolithic Age.

The finding of the remains of the Celtic fortress located on Pen Dinas is evidence that the site was settled in prior to 700 BC. In addition, a medieval ringfort was also uncovered on a hill across the River Ystwyth.

Penparcau's modern history is quite interesting. Smuggling was a big part of the economy during the 18th century, and there are records showing smuggling activity by the Powell and Stedman families.
