History

Brynamman used to be referred to as “Y Gwter Fawr”, Welsh for “The Big Gutter”. This was from the large gutter that was a result of coal production. Since Lower Brynamman is along the River Amman, the soil was washed away when the water from the dam built to access the coal was released.

Before the 1800s, the place was filled with farms until the first coal mine was built. It was also around 1823 when the first public house was built, the “Yr Hen Farmers” and the first philanthropic society in the community, which was known as “Yr Hen Glwb”.

Brynamman Public Hall Cinema

Operated by a team of volunteers, this neoclassical cinema was built by the coal miners in the 1920s. Today, the locals and tourists get to enjoy films, seven times a week. Enjoy the comfortable, plush seats and get nostalgic in this old cinema.

Black Mountain Centre

This former school is now a centre where visitors can go and get information if they want to explore Brynamman. It has numerous facilities for tourists and customers that include free internet access, Heritage displays, sumptuous home-cooked food and a gallery.

Black Mountain Quarry

This is an interesting place to stop over before you explore the mountain and feast your eyes on the diverse wildlife in the area as well as learn more about the industrial heritage of the village.

Ynys Dawela Nature Park

Managed by the Carmarthenshire County Council, this beauty of nature is bordered in the north by the Brecon Beacons National Park and in the south, by the River Amman. Formerly a working farm, this 39-acre land is now filled with Brynamman flowers and some of which are not easy to find. Two of the scarce flowers in Brynamman include Meadow Thistle and Whorled Caraway. Apart from these blooms, it also has important habitats that shelter the animals and plants found in the area.
